Workshop costs typically vary by group size. Contact us for more details on the workshop and pricing based on your organization.
Typically sessions start at $130/50-minute session, however thanks to commitment of our donors and fundraising partners we are able to provide low to no cost sessions on a sliding scale based on the needs of the client.
The ability to provide low cost or fully subsidized sessions is very important to us and to members of the community who typically can’t afford therapy. We are only able to do this because of the generosity of donors, but we recognize not everyone is in dire need of financial support. We offer low to no cost sessions based on employment status and source of income.
Currently, we have two therapists, the co-founders of BMHM, Susan Bascillo and Yemi Faderin. We are always open, and always encouraging other Black therapists to join our team!
Donations help us keep BMHM thriving. All of the funds received both through donations and workshop registrations help us pay therapists a fair wage for their work, as well as manage communications and marketing to raise awareness of our services and to stay connected to our community. The funds also help us pay for space to conduct therapy sessions. Most importantly, the largest portion of the donations help us to provide low-to-no cost treatment to low-income clients who need it.
We tailor workshop/webinar length and depth to the needs of your group. Workshop topics include historical and race-based trauma, structural racism, cultural competence, mental health stigma, social determinants of health, mental health in the Black community and more.
We offer treatment at our individual clinics for any client who is seeking therapy. This fund is a direct response to a need in the Black community, the need that would see stigma surrounding seeking therapy diminished. There are also socio-economic circumstances that are deterring many Black clients from seeking help, particularly lack of income. There is a need for the work we are doing to address anti-Black racism that has for too long been ignored or undermined as “problem of the past” here in Canada. Because there are such significant needs, we will be serving Black clients through this fund. However, the workshops we provide cater to any and every organization looking to support this cause, use their voices and gain practical knowledge they can apply while on the job. All are welcome.
Any client seeking therapy should feel comfortable talking about their experiences with their therapist. Having conversations, particularly those surrounding race or a race-based incidents, can be very difficult for Black individuals. Typically these types of experiences have been ignored, undermined, mocked or neglected. While it’s not impossible to have open and honest conversations with individuals of other races, it is vital that Black clients have a space to talk freely about their circumstances, feelings, and experiences. Not being able to talk to a Black therapist has been a deterrent for many. We are hoping to help more people in the Black community by creating a culturally sensitive and safe atmosphere where healing can take place.
We refer clients seeking individual and couples therapy to trusted outside therapists when necessary, at set sliding scale prices. BMHM subsidizes the first 5 sessions. If a client, referred by BMHM, agrees to continue after the first 5 sessions with that therapist, that is an agreement between the therapist and the client. BMHMC provides contracts, to be signed by all parties involved, that confirms agreed pricing for the first 5 sessions only.
